History

FlightSafety Academy has been the flight school of choice for thousands of pilots, hundreds of commercial and corporate operators as well as governments from around the world for nearly fifty years. The Academy is proud to graduate professional, well trained pilots taking satisfaction in seeing them join commercial airliners, corporate and charter operators as well as many government air forces and public service organizations. The Academy maintains our founder's belief that "the best safety device in any aircraft is a well-trained crew."

FlightSafety International, our parent organization, a Berkshire Hathaway company, was founded in 1951 by A.L. Ueltschi. A former airline and business aircraft pilot, Mr. Ueltschi saw the need and opportunity to offer aviation professionals advance pilot training techniques and incorporate higher technology training equipment. He developed FlightSafety International into the world's leader in pilot training. His legacy in the aviation industry extends over the past sixty years; from the advent of the first commercial jet airliner to today's glass flight deck aircraft. Today, more than 75,000 fixed wing and rotor wing aviation professionals around the world train at FlightSafety International centers each year for commercial, business, military and private aviation.

The Academy's home, Vero Beach Municipal Airport (VRB) is steeped in aviation history starting with its dedication in 1930. Eastern Airlines began using the airport for refueling and in 1932 initiated passenger and mail flights. In 1942 the U.S. Navy selected the airport for use as a Naval Air Station which continued until 1947. In 1957 Piper Aircraft selected Vero Beach for their research and development center and in 1961 moved all administrative and manufacturing to VRB.
